史载,颜氏上祖中擅长书法者主要有:颜真卿十代从祖颜延之(颜延之与真卿十代祖颜靖之为堂兄弟)、九代从祖颜峻、九代祖颜腾之、八代祖颜炳之、六代祖颜协、五代祖颜之推、曾祖颜勤礼与从曾祖颜籀、祖父颜昭甫、伯父颜元孙。其中,除颜勤礼和颜师古擅篆籀外,其他多以擅长草隶书见称于世。唐张怀瓘《书断》将颜延之和谢朓书法相提并论:“谢朓,字玄晖…草书甚有声,草殊流美薄暮川上,余霞照人,春晚林中,飞花满目。……颜延之亦善草书,乃其亚也。”这说明颜延之与谢朓书法水平相当,而且擅长草书。唐窦臮撰、窦蒙注《述书赋》讲到颜延之儿子颜峻时云:“颜氏儒门,士逊墨妙。
