Pigment epithelial derived factor (PEDF) is derived from human retinal pigment epithelial cells and is an effective inhibitor of angiogenesis in the eye. It plays an important role in maintaining the transparent and avascular state of normal eye tissues. PEDF can fight a variety of proangiogenic factors, targeted inhibition of pathological angiogenesis, delaying the progression of diabetic retinopathy, play a protective role. In the meantime, a decrease in ocular concentration of PEDF may increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Its mechanism of action is still under exploration. Exogenous application of PEDF and gene therapy for eye vascular proliferative disease has a significant effect. Therefore, in-depth studies may find a broader role for PEDF in the treatment of clinical vascular proliferative diseases.
