船山的游仙诗主要昭示着这样几种含义:第一,他认为道教仙境应是人们净化心灵、保全人格、提升境界之所,因而对历史上那些希望通过求仙采药以满足个人无穷欲望的秦皇汉武之流予以了无情的批判与鞭挞。第二,船山对历史上有名的方士和道教徒如徐巿、郭璞、陶宏景、颜真卿等颇怀敬意,是因为宗教既是他们的生存方式与精神寄托,也是他们与世俗分道扬镳、同暴政分庭抗礼的精神领地。第三,船山的游仙诗也表达了坚守己志、不肯同清廷合作的遗民态度。
