4月28日,香港电信宣布初步投资4000～5000万港元采用由Nokia提供的通用包无线业务(GPRS)系统。当天两家公司签署了谅解备忘录,香港电信成为Nokia在亚洲的第一个在双频网络上部署GPRS数据传输系统的合作伙伴。 这套系统是向3G发展采用的过渡方案,计划在明年9月投入商用,届时将提供100kbit/s的无线数据传输速率,人们可以从当前14.4kbit/s的“牛车”速率中解脱出来了。
April 28, Hong Kong Telecom announced the initial investment of 40,000 to 50 million Hong Kong dollars by Nokia Universal Packet Radio Services (GPRS) system. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding on the same day and Hong Kong Telecom became the first Nokia partner in Asia to deploy a GPRS data transmission system on a dual-band network. The system is a transitional solution to the 3G evolution and is scheduled to go into commercial operation in September next year and will provide 100kbit / s wireless data rates, freeing up from the current 14.4kbit / s “ox cart” rate .
