鼓楼东大街,把锣鼓巷分割为南北锣鼓巷,两条大胡同。现在的南锣鼓巷和以前的大不一样了。这里和什刹海一起已经成了北京最著名的酒吧休闲区。到了华灯初上之时,这里更有一种老北京味儿与时尚相交融的风情。明、清、民国直到解放后的一段时间,这里可是另一番景象。历史上,南锣鼓巷是达官贵人居住的地方。远的咱不知道,前清时,僧格林沁亲王的府邸在这里;民国时,蒋介石委员长的行宫在这里;解放后,贺龙元帅、廖承志委员长、耿彪将军都在这里住过;文化大革命那年月,陈永贵大叔又在这里住过。以上这些人是人们熟知的,各个时期在这里住过的不特别知名的军政要员也不少。
