中国美术史学是一个有高度自律性、相对封闭的史学体系。它的著述形式多趋于传记与著录,资料多囿于记载与见闻,其中多重记载而轻论述,史料价值多,史学意义少。20世纪初,梁启超提出新史学观,力求摆脱历史循环论的束缚,接受进化论的历史观,把历史看成一个进化的过程,他在《新史学》中指出:
Chinese art history is a highly autonomous and relatively closed historiography system. Its writings tend to be more biographies and bibliographies, more information in the record and knowledge, including multiple records and light discussion, historical value, historical significance. At the beginning of the 20th century, Liang Qichao put forward the new concept of history and tried hard to get rid of the shackles of historical cycle theory. He accepted the historical view of evolution and regarded history as an evolutionary process. He pointed out in New History:
