Dr. Monica Gandhi and others at the University of California, San Francisco, reported that women with HIV disease progression have lower in vivo viral load than men with similar disease stages. This shows that women are more likely than men to benefit from different antiretroviral treatment guidelines. They pointed out that there is controversy over whether the viral load of female HIV-infected persons is lower than that of male HIV-infected people. The current antiretroviral therapy (ART) guidelines are also mainly based on the study of men.
