住房制度改革后,购买商品房已是大势所趋,但目前市场上的商品房价格太高,大多数普通公众无力承担,致使大量商品房空置,1997年全国空置商品房多达6000万平方米。因此,国家推出了一种适合于中低收入家庭的承受能力、具有社会保障性质的商品房——经济适用房。经济适用房推出以来,对现有的房地产市场产生了一定的挤出效应,各种媒体上也炒得非常热闹,但销售情况并不很乐观,问价格的人多,真正掏钱的人少。为了全面反映公众对经济适用房的看法,中国社会调查事务所(SSIC)对北京、上海、重庆、武汉、广州五个城市居民进行了一次电话访问,
