谭鑫培(1847~1917)原籍湖北,京剧大师,是京剧发展史上承先启后的一代宗师。早年人称“谭叫天”,晚年人称“老谭”。他的戏曲艺术影响所及,上至宫庭皇室,下达市井百姓,是当时传播极广的通俗艺术。他的唱做表演,经过余叔岩、谭富英、言菊明、孟小冬等京剧艺术家的继承和发展,至今仍具有重大影响,是研究皮黄声腔必修的课题。陈彦衡(1964?~1934)原籍四川。京剧音乐史上的杰出人物,名琴师,名教师,曾为谭鑫培操琴,为余叔岩、言菊朋说戏,是研究谭鑫培唱腔的专家,著有《说谭》、《戏选》、《燕台菊萃》、《旧剧丛谈》等专著,曾用工尺谱记录了谭氏重点剧目十一出。《谭鑫培与陈彦衡》一文,选自1936年世界编译馆北平分馆出版、徐凌霄所著《皮黄文学研究》一书第五篇最后一节。这是一篇评论性文章,作者对谭鑫培与陈彦衡的京剧艺术有深入的分析和论述,对于研究我国现代戏曲音乐颇有价值,特此选刊供读者参考。
