Introduction The surface hardness of nitrided parts and the hardness distribution in the nitrided layer depend on the alloying element content in the steel and the nitriding process parameters such as nitriding temperature, nitriding time and the kind of nitriding medium. In the early nitriding study, Fry and others had pointed out the influence of the composition of the steel.
