Objective To investigate the relationship between EBV infection and p53 expression in gastric cancer. Methods In situ hybridization was used to detect Epstein-Barr (EBER) -encoded small RNA (EBER1) in paraffin-embedded specimens of patients with gastric cancer. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of p53, an inhibitor of Epstein-Barr virus in gastric cancer and EBV-negative gastric cancer. Results Twenty-three cases of EBER1 positive were detected in 217 specimens of gastric cancer. The average area, average absorbance and integral absorbance of p53 protein in EBV-positive gastric cancer were significantly higher than those in EBV-negative gastric cancer (P <0.05). Conclusion Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is closely related to the aberrant p53 expression in cancer tissue.
