CMGI acquired a controlling stake in Compal’s computer network entry company AltaVista for about $ 2.3 billion. In addition to AltaVista’s controlling stake, CMGI will also acquire its related products --Shopping.com and Zip2 - and will add AltaVista search engine to a network of 40 Internet companies. Under the agreement, Compaq will transfer 83% of AltaVista’s ownership of the assets to CMGI, retaining 17% ownership of the assets itself.
