Rats were given an intraperitoneal injection of a 1.5% crude papain enzyme solution (measured at 150 mg/kg body weight), which markedly induced rat cartilage matrix remodeling injury. Six hours after injection, the content of cartilage chondroitin sulfate (CH·S) in the experimental group began to decrease, and it was only half of the content in the control group at 24 hours. At the same time, the CH and S organic sulfur content in the cartilage decreased significantly. The urinary glycosaminoglycan (GAG) excretion in the experimental group began to increase 12 h after the quantum injection, reached the highest peak at 24 h, and was 3 times the excretion of the control group. The main component of GAG excretion increased was CH·S. The above metabolic damage can be completely restored to normal after 72 hours. Experiments show that papain has no obvious effect on the molecular weight of CH.
