Arteannuin(1)is a new sesquiterpene lactone containing a peroxide group and is anantimalarial principle isolated from Artemisia annua L.Deoxyarteannuin(2)occurs inthe same plant and was isolated as a metabolite from the urine of patients treated with artean-nuin.We now report the first stereocontrolled synthesis of these two naturally occurringsesquiterpene lactones starting from arteannuinic acid by the reaction sequence shown inScheme 2.
