By its actualstrength, however, it seems hardfor China Unicom to maintain bothat the same time. As CDMA de-velops rapidly in China, the com-pany has to put it on the agendato find a way out for GSM. The dilemma is that GSM business is now a keysource for China Unicom's revenue and profit, thoughCDMA may be an opportunity for the company to ex-pand in the mid and long terms. In short term, thecompany cannot tear itself awayfrom GSM, but its branches havenow focused on CDMA market andslash their investments in GSM. However, if its CDMA couldnot develop smoothly and the leasinvestments undermined the con-stitution of GSM, China Unicomwould be in a blind alley.
