1985年秋,安徽望江县黄家堰村村民在进行农田水利基本建设中,发现地下埋藏有许多陶片、残石器和玉片等,感到十分惊奇。当时县里正开展文物普查工作,普查工作队一进村听说这一消息,便告诉村民该地是一处5000多年前的古文化遗址,并向村民宣传《文物保护法》,将村民挖出的文物依法进行收缴。县文物管理所及时将此事转报省文物考古研究所。1997年秋,安徽省文物考古研究所派员配合县文物管理所对该遗址进行了为期两个多月的考古
