一代文学大师梁实秋和夫人程季淑生前都酷爱花木,尤其是西府海棠,他们的一生都与花木结下了不解之缘。1931年,梁氏全家搬到青岛居住时,特地请求房东允许他们在院里栽下几棵花木,好客的房东立刻送来几棵苹果树、樱花树和两棵西府海棠。1933年,全家举迁北平,程季淑便去花场购来西府海棠和丁香,又种下一池玉簪。翌年,便繁花似锦,春光满院,特别是丁香,茂盛阻路,需时时修剪,夫妇俩在写作劳累之余常携手赏玩花草,以作休闲。梁氏夫妇每到一地,对于当地的花木甚为关心。1948年,全家小住广州平山堂,附近有木棉十数棵,高约七八丈,红花盛开,时有谢花落地,程季淑最喜捡拾把玩,乐此不疲。1949年初到台湾,夫妇便在居所前栽下一棵黄莺,一
