巴西是全球燃料乙醇普及时间最长、政府支持力度最大的国家,是世界燃料乙醇的生产大国、消费大国和出口大国。2009年,巴西燃料乙醇产量2174万吨,占全球33%,仅次于美国;国内消费量1765万吨,仅次于美国,占车用液体燃料的53%,已超过汽油消费量;出口美国、欧洲、日本和印度409万吨,出口量全球第一。巴西燃料乙醇实现产业化发展得益于两个因素:
