山西省天保工程区管护总面积7756.38万亩(其中地方公益林6228.59万亩、国家级公益林1527.79万亩),占山西省公益林总面积的64.3%;工程范围涉及9市74县及省直林局共83个县(局)级实施单位;二期规划公益林建设总任务为1275万亩(其中人工造林400万亩,封山育林875万亩),森林抚育710万亩;每年中央补助资金78506万元。全省现有国家级公益林总面积3411.55万亩,覆盖全省113个县市区。其中国有1581.08万亩,非国有1830.47万亩。山西省于2004年启动省级公益林效益补偿,省直9大林局和林职院实验林场1831.84
