Since the end of World War II, radar jamming has developed rapidly, requiring radar designers to carefully consider how to improve their ease of use and survivability in harsh environments. This article describes the steps that interference takes with modern technology, and the techniques by which radar delays and confuses each step to lead the enemy to false inaccuracies. These anti-interference techniques can generally be divided into a low probability of interception (LPIn) scheme and a low probability of recognition (LPId) scheme. They form a new type of interference suppression technology, which the authors call CESM - Counter ESM. Modern radars can incorporate noise-like transmit waveforms and use “chameleon-like” unpredictable radar signatures to dramatically increase their ease of use and survivability in disturbed environments in the 1990s.
