吴地为鸳鸯蝴蝶派提供了丰富的作家资源 ,这个作家群体的形成是吴地教育发达、人文荟萃的文化传统的结晶 ,体现了吴文化尚文重教的文化性格。鸳鸯蝴蝶派所选择的民间文化立场 ,与吴地文人墨客积淀下来的隐士、逍遥哲学有着渊源关系 ,是隐逸文化传统的延续 ,在本世纪初则演变为闲适文化。作为闲适文化的表征 ,鸳鸯蝴蝶派的文学特征是传奇、言情、画风俗 ,深受宋元明以来兴盛于吴地的话本、拟话本小说的影响 ,特别受到《三言》的影响 ,鸳鸯蝴蝶派的传奇作品 ,往往蕴含着吴文化的内涵 ,特别是对一些奇人的刻画 ,能够表现吴人特有的生存方式和性格特征。
