从侗族织绣的纹饰中体现出侗族敬畏自然的多神崇拜特性,在审美意识中万物皆有生命及灵气,即为意象中的图腾。山川河流、虫鱼鸟兽、古树巨石等,都是崇拜对象。于是把祈福安康的意念通过服饰图案纹样载体加以展现,以祈求得到神灵的庇护。由于万物皆是崇拜对象及各聚落自由崇拜的特性,侗族的图案纹饰有百余种,主要分为动物纹、植物纹、景物纹和抽象符号几何纹四大类。
