从1954年至1974年的20年间,毛泽东先后25次回湖南视察工作。每逢气候适宜,稍有闲暇,他都要到湘江游泳。据工作档案记载,毛泽东游湘江计有七次之多。具体时间是:1955年6月20日一次;1956年5月30日一次;1957年9月8日、9日各一次;1959年6月24日、27日各一次;1962年6月10日一次。1956年5月30日,毛泽东从广州乘飞机来湖南。由于当时天气闷热,他一下飞机就到湘江游泳。毛泽东从猴子石下水,向河中游去。当时湘江正在涨大水,因水势汹涌,护游人员被洪水冲散,一些人被洪水卷到橘子洲的小河道中去了。毛泽东水性极好,一直在大河道中畅游约一个小时后,毛泽东从牛头洲(现在的橘子洲头)上岸。尔后在中共湖南省委书记周小舟、长沙市委书记秦雨屏的陪同下,到菜农家里走访。
During the 20 years from 1954 to 1974, Mao Zedong returned to Hunan 25 times. When the climate is suitable, a little leisure, he had to swim to the Xiangjiang River.
