《茶館》这个結构別出心裁的三幕剧,写了比《群英会》多一倍有余的人物。輕輕几笔,就給人一个鮮明的人物形象。光是这一点,就非大家手笔莫办。剧本以王利發为“經”,从王利發茶館的不同面貌,从先后出入茶館的各色不同人等,揭露了黑暗、腐朽的三个旧时代面貌。你看,像王利發这样的老好人也活不下去了;像常二爷这样的爱国志士,竟然入獄,終于穷困聊倒在市井间;……旧社会容不得一点正常、合理、美好的事物存在。“这样的社会非完蛋不可”。——这是看戏后感受到的一个鮮明印象。很显然,老舍先生在回顧我們祖父一辈走过来的这段生活道路时,是从热爱社会主义社会出發的。否則,他对旧社会的批判和揭露,决不可能如此深刻和尖銳;否則,作者也不至于把王利發的下一代,安排跟着康大力走了。老舍先生自己說,写这个剧本的目的,是为了“葬送三个时代”;如果他不热爱幸福的今天,他决不可能去葬送黑暗的昨天。《茶館》体现了这位老作家可貴的政治热情。茶館虽是社会的一个小角落,但它却是一部六十年生活变迁史。我想,如果是一位迷信三一律的作者,他很可能安排王利發祖孙三代一齐上台,通过回忆等等方式,来反映和交代六十年的情况。这样,它給人的印象决不可能像現在这样鮮明具体。老舍先生处理这个題材时,打破了話剧的常
