In July 2012, “21st Century Rhetoric Interactive Forum ” was held in the academic center of the English-speaking world at Oxford University. Dialogue was conducted between Sir Brian Vix, a scholar in the western rhetoric field, and Professor Chen RuDong, a Peking University scholar of the East rhetoric field. The two talk about the development trend of international rhetoric in the 21st century and the purpose and function of rhetoric become the highlight of the forum. The dialogues reflect the confrontation and conflict between Eastern and Western cultural perspectives and attract academic attention. In this article, the author explores the role of this dialogue in promoting understanding of rhetoric in China, the West and the world. This high-level dialogue shows the importance of academic exchange in international rhetoric. Academic exchanges have prompted Western scholars to abandon the notion of “Chinese or Oriental non-rhetoric.” As Chen Rudong elaborated in his response to Vickers, Chinese rhetoric provides a paradigm for mutual understanding, reference and cooperation among different cultures. However, the dialogue between Wix and Chen Rudong shows that Chinese rhetoric and western rhetoric can achieve harmonious coexistence, which requires them to understand, appreciate and learn from each other, In order to make a real contribution to the development of global rhetoric in the 21st century.
