中国玉雕横跨了美学两个主要范畴—艺术美和自然美。在许多艺术门类中,材料只是介质,例如颜料是绘画的介质,纸墨是书法的介质,就连西方雕塑也讲求“材料消融于形式”。但是,以和田玉为代表的中国玉文化,其材料自身就是温润、晶莹、脉理坚实的审美意象。在玉雕工艺一代代的传承中,“因材施艺”这句话讲了千百年,能够深得奥妙的人其实并不很多,当今的苏然可谓其中的翘楚。
