A divisional economic organization in Europe is in the midst of a change. The EC in the west has made it its goal to achieve the internal big market by the end of 1992; several of the inter-member countries in the east have to carry out radical reforms in the failed planned economy. Both of these goals are part of a global move towards more markets. However, both seem to have no agreement on a decisive issue such as the economic prospects for the whole of Europe. Just as many Eastern European countries are increasingly seeking to get in touch with Western Europe as a result of reforms, a misunderstood “1992 internal market” will further deepen the economic divide in this ancient continent.
