“五句子”是一种历史比较悠久的民歌体裁,传播范围颇为广泛。有文献可考的五句子歌兴盛于明代中晚期,以“桐城时兴歌”为代表,见于冯梦龙辑《山歌》中的“桐城时兴歌”、《风月词珍》中的“时兴桐城山歌”、《乐府万象新》中的“五句妙歌”等。五句子山歌至今仍在民间广为流传,尤以湖北恩施地区的五句子歌为代表。比较桐城时兴歌和恩施五句子在体制上、主题内容上的相似性及差异性。结合在恩施太阳河乡的田野考察,可以发现恩施五句子与桐城时兴歌之间有一定关联。
