本文在与“圣经”原型的对照中,作者从另一个视角分析了托马斯·哈代《卡斯特桥市长》中的主人公边克·亨察尔悲剧:人束缚于来自自我的弱点——嫉妒和野心。《圣经》作为西方文化遗产对西方文学有着深远的影响,《卡斯特桥市长》可视为圣经文化产物之一。对《旧约·撒母耳记》中扫罗与大卫的故事和《卡斯特桥市长》中亨察尔与伐尔伏雷故事比较研究,使我们不难看出人与自我的冲突是人类社会永恒的主题。
