In October 2003, the Research Center of Oriental Archaeology, Shandong University,the Research Center of Ancient Civilization, IA, CASS, and the Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology held the “International Symposium on the Civilizing Course of Ancient Society in East China” in Jinan City, Shandong Province. Around the subject, the attendants discussed the following problems: the position of East China in the course of civilization;the macroscopic consideration of civilizing course in the Haidai Region; prehistoric settlements and cultural evolution in the lower Yangtze River valley; the Huaihe River cultures in pre-Qin times; the role of the ritual institution of Dawenkou culture in the civilizing course of the Yellow River valley; and the causes of extensive cultural changes around 2000 BC.
