本文原载英国《英语教学》杂志1984年4月号(38卷第2期)。作者Sylvia Chal-ker在这篇文章中指出了编纂英语语法书时会遇到的一些问题,并提出了一些解决办法,读后颇受启发,因此,我们乐于向广大英语教师推荐这篇文章。作者于1976年获得伦敦大学语言学研究生文凭,目前在Randolph Quirk教授手下从事“英语惯用法调查”(the Survey of English Usage)的工作。她致力于EFL①教学工作已有二十余年。从1979至1981年,她在新加坡从事英语教学和师资培训工作。她发表的著作包括:Going it Alone(1978),Let’s See Great Britain(1979),Harrap’s SchoolFrench and English Dictionary(1978)中的英语语法部分。最近又撰写了一本参考语法书CurrentEnglish Grammar(Macmillan)。
This article was originally published in the British “English Teaching” magazine 1984 April (38 volumes No. 2). In this article, author Sylvia Chal-ker points out some of the problems encountered in the compilation of English grammar books and proposes some solutions that are enlightening upon reading. Therefore, we are happy to recommend this article to a large number of English teachers. The author obtained a postgraduate diploma in linguistics from the University of London in 1976 and is currently working on the Survey of English Usage under Professor Randolph Quirk. She has been teaching EFL for more than 20 years. From 1979 to 1981, she worked in English teaching and teacher training in Singapore. Her published books include the English Grammar section of Going it Alone (1978), Let’s See Great Britain (1979), Harrap’s School French and English Dictionary (1978). Recently wrote a reference grammar book CurrentEnglish Grammar (Macmillan).
