The Pentium processor is Intel’s next generation of compatible microprocessors following the widely used i486 chipset. Its design began in early 1989 with the main goal of maximizing performance on the one hand and maintaining software compatibility on the one hand, within the practical range of prior art. The Pentium processor uses 0.8μm BiCMOS technology with 3.1 million integrated transistors. The continuous development of semiconductor technology has promoted the innovation of microprocessor design. Due to the reduction of feature size and the increase of interconnection layer, the integration is improved, allowing designers to increase hardware resource allocation for more parallel computing and deeper pipeline operations.
