共和镇地处牟定县城。总面积14.29平方公里,辖5个办事处,总人口15714人,1995年实现多镇营业收入10850万元,跨入了亿元乡镇的行列,1997年全镇经济总收入实现了32204万元,比1996年的19743万元增长63.11％,其中乡镇企业收入30054万元。名列楚雄州10强乡镇之列,5个办事处中东南、西北和锦石坪办事处都名列楚雄州50强村办之列,其中东南办事处提前3年于1997年跨进了亿元办事处的行列。进入90年代中期,共和镇党委、政府确立“围绕经济抓党建,抓好党建促经济”的工作指导思想,大力发展非公有制经济,使共和镇经济实现持续、高速、健康发展势头。
