The United States has a favorite, noteworthy account of the historical roots of environmental philosophy that has not only historical anecdotes but also knowledge that forms some of the key conceptual sources of contemporary North American environmental philosophy. However, this folk knowledge of the historical origins of North American environmental thinking is incomplete. The wilderness-based history commonly used by environmental philosophers should be complemented by the neglected 19th century North American urban rubbish and sanitation records. This complementary history has changed the conceptual area in which North American environmental philosophy has been hesitant. This new area can better meet the challenges of many major regional and international environments.
