企鹅书屋于1996年出版的《庄子》英文全译本配有34幅插图,其中一幅插图使用了两次。封面、插图及篇名的翻译,传递着与《庄子》文本内容相关而又自成一体的文化信息。22幅选自清末民初画家王念慈山水画谱的插图,反映出译者主要接受了《庄子》“逍遥游”的思想、并将《庄子》的超越性逍遥诠释为在人间的逍遥。可能译者在中国绘画中发现了他在《庄子》中领悟到的自由。11幅选自《玉历宝钞》、《大悲咒》和《金刚经》的插图,则反映出西方学者对中国文化兼容性的体认。
Penguin Books published in 1996, “Zhuangzi” English translation with 34 illustrations, one of the illustrations used twice. The translation of the cover, illustrations and articles conveys cultural information that is related to and integrated with the text of Zhuangzi. The illustrations of 22 landscape paintings by Wang Nianzi, an artist from the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China, show that the translator mainly accepted the thought of “Zhuangzi” and “Happy Tour” and interpreted the transcendental liberation of “Zhuang Zi” as Happy at Home. Perhaps the translator discovered in his Chinese paintings the freedom that he realized in Chuang-Tzu. Eleven illustrations of the Jade Calendar, Great Compassion and Diamond Sutra reflect the recognition of Chinese cultural compatibility by Western scholars.
