麦积山,又名麦积崖,因其形“如农家积麦之状”而得名。它位于秦岭两段的北麓,周围群峰环抱,麦积一秀崛起,海拔1742来,距天水火站车三十公里,区内松竹丛生,山峦迭翠,古称“秦地林泉之冠”。据史书记载,麦积山石窟始创于十六国后秦,(公元三八四年至四一七年)两秦时,著名禅僧玄高、昙弘在此讲学,“聚集僧人三百”。北魏,西魏、北周三朝,大兴崖阁、造像万千、隋、唐、五代、宋、元、明、清都曾不断开凿或重修。历史上虽遭多次地震、火灾的破坏,仍保存窟龛194个,泥塑、石刻七千余件,壁画千余平方水,北朝崖阁八座,素有”东方雕塑陈列馆”之称。是我国著名的石窟寺之一。
