欧洲音乐在上古的荷马史诗时期,就已产生了颇具文明意义的典祀音乐,并形成欧洲风格的音阶调式及八度谐音无和声的合唱形式。在欧洲文明发展的同时,也产生出光辉灿烂的音乐文化,在无数音乐大师的创造下,慢慢形成的乐律科学不断发展,最终形成欧洲音乐主要风格特点的复调音乐。从荷马时代音乐各种形式的形成,以循序渐进的形式发展到对后世起到根本影响的综合艺术的“希腊悲剧”时代,以及作为中世纪时期代宗教音乐与文艺复兴音乐传承纽带的“新艺术”,音乐作为一种观念形态的艺术门类,总是在每一个时代的衔接传承下发展向前。
