The basic idea of the advanced train control system (ATCS) project being implemented by North American railroad industry is to combine data communications with on-board computers to replace train-side command methods such as traditional wayside lights and verbal and written dispatch commands. Using this system, the Command and Dispatch Center displays the driving organization information to the driver at any time, and the locomotive computer adjusts the running speed according to the information and forces the vehicle to stop in case of emergency. Locomotive computer also at any time the train operating position, speed and other parameters feedback command and control center, and accordingly regulate. Locomotives are also equipped with various sensors to monitor the “health” of locomotives. Through the data radio transmission, this information is passed to the command and dispatch center and depot, and they decide whether the locomotive needs technical service when it arrives at the next stop.
