语言和其它事物一样是在不断发展和变化着的,其主要标志之一就是词语的义变.所谓词语义变是指词语的意义起了变化,即一个词现在的含义与过去的含义不同了,也就是今义与古义的差别.当然,不是所有的词语都有今义与古义之差,也不是凡有今古义之差的词语的差别程度都是一样的,实际情况是,大部分词语的含义并无古今之分,而那些有今古义区分的词语的义差也是有的小,有的大,也有的令义与古义南辕北辙,背道而驰.一个翻译工作者如果不注意某些词语的这种差别,而是“一视同仁”,今古不辨,结果就会园凿方枘,其译文与原文对不上号,甚至贻笑大方.例如:
