奏鸣曲(Sonata)这个英文词是从意大利文So-nare词转变而来,它原来的意思是“鸣响”。所以在16-17世纪,凡是用器乐演奏的乐曲统称Sonata,以区别于有器乐伴奏的声乐曲。奏鸣曲这个名词,指类似组曲的室内套曲,它由多段对比性的乐段组成。那时分“室内奏鸣曲”(Sontatda chiesa)和“教堂奏鸣曲”两大类。“室内奏鸣曲”多为两人演奏,即一人独奏,另一人用键盘乐器采用通奏低音为之伴奏。
