It has been proposed in the past that unexplained fulminant hepatitis (FH) and sub-fulminant hepatitis (SFH) may be non-A, B (NANB) hepatitis virus infections. It has recently been affirmed that HCV is the major etiologic agent of parenterally transmitted NANB hepatitis. However, preliminary reports from Japan and the United States show that the positive rates of HCV RNA in liver and serum of NANB FH patients are different. This article reports the results of a study of HBV, HCV and HEV infections in a group of patients with FH and SFH in France. Forty patients studied FH28 cases and SFH12 cases. The patients were divided into two groups: the first group of 17 cases (FH15 cases, SFH2 cases) all associated with HBV infection. 16 cases
