This article describes a matrix-addressable array high-vacuum fluorescent display using multiple sets of Spindt-type field emitter tips. The development of the display required the promotion of cathode fabrication technology to allow the field emitter array to evenly cover an area of 5 inches in diameter. A group of hundreds of emitter-tip-addressed display units for each color cell operated in parallel. The electrons emitted from the tip are focused on each color cell in close proximity. Because each pixel is essentially a small cathode ray tube, flat-panel devices 3.3 inches (8.4 cm) long by 0.15 inches (4 mm) thick have the ability to produce brightness similar to cathode ray tubes.
