在没有去过英国的人当中,知道 HOST 的恐怕不多;而去过英国的外国留学生及其亲属,大概很少有人不知道它。1994年～1995年间,我随去进修的丈夫在英国生活了将近一年,对英国的风土人情有了不少了解,其中有许多都得益于 HOST。“海外留学生之家”Host 一词,在英文中有“主人”(名词)或者“作为主人招待宾客”(动词)之意。作为英国一个机构的名字。HOST 是 Hosting for Overseas Students 的缩写,似可译为“海外留学生之家”。这个缩写词与英文单词host 恰有某种难得的巧合。HOST 是由英国外交和联邦事务部、英国文化委员会以及维多利亚同盟会于1987年创立的一个慈善机构。它的宗旨,就是向来英国学习的各国留学生介绍英国人的家庭生活,使留学生们对英国的社会文化、历史地理等有进一步的了解。怎样介绍英国人的家庭生活呢?不是办展览、开讲座,也不靠图书资料或各种宣传媒体,HOST 采用
