Objective To investigate the changes of NK cell subsets in HIV infected persons, patients with onset and those treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Methods Fresh peripheral whole blood was obtained and stained with fluorescent labeled monoclonal antibody. The changes of NK cell subsets in HIV infected persons, patients and HAART patients were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results The percentage of CD56dimCD16 + NK cells in HIV-infected and onset patients was significantly lower than that in HIV antibody-negative healthy controls. The percentage of CD56-CD16 + and CD56briCD16- / + NK cells was significantly higher than that of HIV antibody-negative healthy controls. The percentage of CD16 + and CD56briCD16 - / + NK cell subsets no longer significantly differed from the HIV antibody negative healthy controls. Conclusion HIV infection changed the composition of NK cell subsets, and the proportion of NK cell subsets after HAART treatment could be partially restored.
