太湖流域北临长江,南至钱塘江,东达东海,三面环水;西以海拔400公尺的茅山山脉与青弋江、秦淮河为界,西南以海拔1,500公尺的天目山山脉与钱塘江流域相接,流域面积37,000平方公里。流域内水网密布、湖泊罗列,湖泊水网面积达5,800平方公里,占总面积的16％。流域内的湖泊以太湖为主,太湖集纳苕溪、荆溪及滨湖地区迳流,集流面积约16,500平方公里(包括太湖本身2,250平方公里在内)。太湖洪枯水位变幅不大,
