What is life outside of the war? It is at this moment that we can see the impact and excitement we received when we encountered nearly a thousand photos of David Keluke in sharp contrast with those photographs about the war. Born in London in 1910, David Keluoke joined the British Communist Party in 1935 and participated in the Spanish Civil War. In 1938, she was sent to China by Comintern, first taught at St. John’s University in Shanghai, then went to Chengdu and met his later wife, Isabelle. At the end of 1947, David, who joined the RAF during World War II and spent most of his wartime years in Southeast Asia, left England and took a boat to Hong Kong and Tianjin to come to Shilipu Village in the liberated area of the Jin-Ji-Luyu Liberation Area . In the ensuing eight months, with the dual identities of British communists and social anthropologists, they inspected the small Hebei village in the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains as “Shilihu: a village revolution” and “Shilihu shop: The mass movement in a village ”laid the foundation for the writing of the two books. The former book has become an indispensable reference for the western academia to study the issue of CCP land reform.
