By 1999, there will be more than 118 million cellular subscribers in about 120 countries around the world. By the end of 1993, there were over 34 million cellular subscribers worldwide, 50% of whom were in North America, 25% in Western Europe and 19% in the Asia Pacific region. By 1999, the North American share of cellular subscribers will be reduced to 35%, while Asia Pacific will replace Western Europe as the second largest regional market with 32% of users worldwide. The development of cellular communication is driven by many factors. These factors include inadequate landline networks, lower equipment prices, market liberalization, and overall economic growth.
