Three national nutrition surveys have been conducted since the liberation of our country, the first two were 1959 and 1982 respectively. The third survey, which began in September 1992, took more than two years and ended in late 1994. The Ministry of Health led the formation of the “Third National Nutrition Survey Leading Group” by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Public Security and the National Bureau of Statistics. More than 2,000 experts, consultants and professionals participated in this massive investigation. The survey also received technical and financial support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Canadian International Development Center, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The survey uses a multi-level, multi-level cluster random sampling method to conduct nationwide household sample surveys.
