UNIX has finally seen a unified dawn. On March 31, IBM, Intel and SCO jointly released to the industry the achievements of the tripartite cooperation in promoting the Monterey project in the past two years and the development goals for the next period. The ultimate goal of the Monterey initiative, co-authored by IBM, Intel and SCO, is to build an enterprise-class commercial UNIX product line that runs on both Intel IA-32, IA-64, and IBM Power processors and is broadly applicable Departmental servers up to the super server in a large database hub. As part of the plan, the three companies combined IBM’s AIX, NUMA-Q, and SCO Unixix technologies to develop IA-64-based operating systems.
