The latest theory suggests that endogenous opioids are involved in the regulation of bowel movement and function. Although the pathophysiological mechanism of constipation remains unclear, it has become clear over the years that opiates can reverse diarrhea; constipation is a side effect of treatment with morphine and other opiate derivatives.
